Just as Netflix has done in the past with Arrested Development and Orange is the New Black, Machinima released its entire 10-episode second season of the Mortal Kombat: Legacy YouTube series all at once today. The first season of the Warner Bros.-produced series has racked up more than 70 million views and, as reported by GigaOm, Machinima has high hopes for the follow-up — which is the reason Kevin Tancharoen, a choreographer turned director, was given more time and resources to make the latest set of episodes.
"Fights are designed better this season because we were able to shot list the fight by every move," Tancharoen told GigaOm in an interview. "And the writers had more time to carve out an overarching narrative. Season 1 was more anthology-driven — this season, characters have a linear narrative." Specifically, he explained that the new episodes aim for a story that balances between the Mortal Kombat tournament seen in the classic video game series and the 1995 New Line Cinema film, with a broader tale of war.

With season two now live and streaming for the world to see, Tancharoen is turning his efforts to a rebooted Mortal Kombat feature film, and a possible third season of Legacy. The director is, however, promising that the film and Legacy will tread different paths. "While Legacy is telling a tournament story, the movie is a completely other storyline," he said. "It's the writers who keep me in check."
